A new outfit for our aged grappas

    •    Stories    •    No comments

All our Grappa di Barolos aged 9, 12, 15 and 20 years have newly designed packaging. A tribute to the iconic products of the Marolo distillery.

The Grappe Invecchiate – aged Grappas di Barolo – have always been Marolo’s flagship bottles, our highest expression of the ‘spirit of the territory.’ They are made with our traditional method, or as we call it, ‘forgetting’ the grappa in barrels to age. A practice which started in 1977, the year Paolo Marolo founded the distillery in Alba, the capital of the Langhe.

Since then ageing grappa has been our primary focus of experimentation and innovation. This has led to the Grappe Invecchiate line of products. A mix of oak and acacia and grappa specific traditional dosage round out and soften the grappas that showcases the original aromas of the vine.

A GROWING MARKET

The market for long-aged spirit alcohols has grown consistently over the last few years. A trend that began in the US, consumers are more attentive to characteristics such as ageing, unique packaging, small-batch production and an artisanal story. A long ageing is only truly possible when the raw ingredients are of the highest quality coupled with expert distillation techniques that extract only the best compounds and constant attention during the long years of elevage, as the French call it.

ANGELS’ SHARE

In the ageing of grappa a process called angels’ share naturally occurs. It is the progress diminution of the total volume of grappa year after year, caused by evaporation of liquid from the barrels, which concentrates the aromatic properties and refining the quality of the grappa. In short, when it comes to grappa less is more, only if aged.

AN ELEGANT AND BALANCED BODY

Long-ageing only enhances a grappa if the primary ingredients are carefully selected and bright characteristics that will persist over time become present with the first distillation. Marolo’s pomace arrives fresh from the most renown areas of the Barolo appellation, and is slowly distilled in a bain-marie pot still directly after racking. Our focus is on making artisanal distillates that concentrate and showcase the natural nobility of the nebbiolo vine. Notes of mature red fruits, jam and syrup that are balanced and complemented by tabacco, anise, licorice and nutmeg introduced by wooden barrels. An amazing aged Grappa di Barolo is like a beautiful body clothed in the most elegant outfit.

THE KINGFISHER LABELS AND THE ‘FRUITS’ OF THE ROSES

The new packaging speaks of the elegance of the product. Embellished with detailed graphic elements and braille serigraphy, each bottle is carefully wrapped in cotton paper and tied with a ribbon. The new labels tell the story of maturation. A kingfisher, the symbol of our distillery, is perched atop a rose stem that grows with the years. At 9 years it is a small bud, blooming into beautiful flowers at 12 and 15 years, until finally reaching the rare rosehips, the precious ‘fruit’ of the rose at 20 years.
